Badgers gain valuable reps during midweek matinee in Plainview

The Badgers nearly mounted a comeback after falling behind 3-0 after two innings against the Wayland Baptist junior varsity squad on Monday in Plainview.

But the Pioneers scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth frame to close out a 9-8 victory at Wilder Field.

In the fifth inning, shortstop Jan Avila hit an RBI double to narrow AC's deficit to 5-4. Jacob Sullens then hit his first homer of the season with two outs, giving the Badgers a 6-5 advantage.

Cam Saleh followed with a solo home run to extend AC's lead (7-5). An Aidan Young single added another run for the Badgers before the top of the sixth frame concluded.

Wayland Baptist regained the lead in the bottom of the inning with two outs. A batter hit by pitch, an error, a walk, followed by a single and double was enough for the home team to secure the victory.

Sullens made his second start of the season and had a career day at the plate. The transfer from Texas A&M Corpus Christi hit a double, along with his two-run homer to finish the contest 2-of-4 at the dish.

Saleh, who had played in 20 of the Badgers 37 games heading into Monday's matchup, hit his fourth homer of the season during Monday's matinee.

The redshirt freshman outfielder has the sixth-highest slugging percentage on the team currently at .673.

Amarillo College had five pitchers take the mound on Monday. Freshman Remington Spoerl struck out two batters, walked three, and allowed one earned run in his first start.

After two innings, Bryce Gilchrist was placed on the hill for the third and fourth frame. The Sam Houston St. transfer recorded two strikeouts and allowed no hits.

Saleh took over pitching duties for the fifth and sixth innings. The Denton native allowed four hits and struck out one batter.

Sophomores J.P. Hinojosa and Gabe Watson pitched one inning apiece in the final two frames. Hinojosa allowed hit and struck out one batter while Watson allowed no hits and struck out one.

The loss moves Amarillo College's overall record to 23-15.
