Badger XC has strong showing at Texas Tech Open

For the first time in their cross country careers, Amarillo College freshmen Rubie Trevino and Jerin Perkins made the 6K and 8K trek when they took to the LCU XC Course on Friday at the Texas Tech Open.

Their results suggested otherwise.

Trevino finished the women's 6K race with the second-fastest time (28 minutes 32 seconds) on the Lady Badgers roster after clocking the fifth-fastest mark in AC's first meet of the season. The time of the Hereford High grad was good enough for 95th place out of 128 competitors who completed the race.

Perkins followed suit with his season-opening performance in Abilene two weeks prior as the Amarillo High product took second on the Badger men's team once again. The former Sandie took 72nd place in a field of 165 athletes, crossing the finish line of the 8K race in 28:21.

Sophomore Gabe Enriquez paced the men's team by placing 65th (28:06) and Ariyah Gomez led the women's team for the second consecutive meet via a 41st place finish.

"With a sloppy course I thought the athletes ran well. There was one point on the course where we ran we ran through knee high river for 10 meters," Amarillo College head coach Sean Hargrove said. "It's great to be able to run against such good DI teams. We want to keep growing and improving as runners and as a team."

The Badger men's team finished in 10th place out of 17 teams while the Lady Badgers took 13th place out of 16 teams.

Up next for the Amarillo College cross country team is the New Mexico Junior College Invitational on Friday, Sept. 22.

"Next weekend at NMJC we will see how we look against a few more of the juco's in our region," Hargrove added.
