Trevino, Perkins earn Plains Dairy Runners of the Week honors

Amarillo College freshmen cross country runners Rubie Trevino and Jerin Perkins are the Plains Dairy Runners of Week following their outstanding showings at the Texas Tech Open on Sept. 15.

Trevino vaulted from fifth on the team in week one of the season to second on the Lady Badgers roster two weeks later.

“Rubie did extremely well in her first 6K. She showed tremendous improvement and heart against some elite competition,” Badger head coach Sean Hargrove said.

Perkins continued to cement himself as the Badgers clear cut No. 2 runner, only behind returning Amarillo College Male XC Athlete of the Year, Gabe Enriquez.

The Amarillo High graduate placed in the top 50 percentile during last Friday’s 165-person race against the likes of multiple division I teams (Oklahoma, Texas Tech, UTEP, New Mexico St.), Division II power (West Texas A&M University) and defending NJCAA Division I runner-up New Mexico Junior College.

“Jerin is in a great spot at this point in the season and he continues to work hard to improve his times. That was his first 8K and he did very well in less-than-ideal conditions,” Hargrove noted.
